Georgy Kostaki. “Departure from USSR approved…”. To the 100th Collector’s Anniversary

Two halves of a unique collection of Russian avant-garde and nonconformist art are reunited.

At a time when avant-garde and nonconformist art was condemned by Soviet ideology, Kostakis obtained pictures by Kandinsky, Malevich and Chagall. He left part of his collection with the Tretyakov when he emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1977, and the rest ended up in a Thessaloniki museum. This is the first chance in many years to see the collection brought back together.
