Anselm Kiefer
Following on from David Hockney and Anish Kapur, the Royal Academy has turned its attention to Anselm Kiefer.
A student of Joseph Beuys who dreamed as a child of becoming Christ or the Pope, Kiefer is now aiming to resolve humanity's moral and philosophical problems through his art. The key themes of his installations, paintings, sculptures and photographs are Nazism and the Holocaust, the tragedy of the German spirit and, in that connection, death, destruction, pain and decay.
