Main Project. Deep Inside
In installations, films, paintings and interdisciplinary projects, the artists present "the view from the abyss."
This biennale is young in every sense – all the artists are under 35, as are the curator of the main project, Britain's Nadim Samman, the curators of the two strategic projects, Portgual's João Laia and Italy's Silvia Franceschini and Valeria Mancinelli, and biennale commissar Ekaterina Kibovsksaya, who is renowned as the creative director of Gorky Park and the ArtKvartal development. These vigorous young artists and curators have addressed pressing issues. Samman asked 87 young artists and artistic duos from 36 countries to focus on ecological and economic problems and the dangers of new technologies and social instability. "We live in an era of disruption," Samman says. "Artists now find inspiration in uncertainty, ambiguity, in codes and conspiracies, in contemplating instability and multidimensionality. We exist in a state of free fall, descending deeper and deeper into something like a black hole."
